Communicating Effectively about Donation (CEaD)

What is CEaD?

Communicating Effectively about Donation (CEaD) is an interactive communication intervention based on informed decision-making and effective communication techniques coupled with 30 years of experience and research into decision-making of families responding to organ and tissue donation discussions.

Key points:

  • Grounded in informed decision-making and effective communication techniques
  • Built on three decades of research into family decision making
  • Supports professionals during organ and tissue donation conversations. Designed to improve clarity, confidence, and sensitivity in discussions

Evidence and Impact

Extensive research demonstrates that more effective communication significantly improves the quality and outcomes of donation conversations and is consistently and strongly associated with increased authorization.

Key points:

  • Evidence-based research conducted over a 30-year period
  • Authorization rates increased to as high as 92% in some settings
  • National testing improved the quality of donation discussions
  • Ensures families receive the information they need to make informed decisions

The research has been funded by leading federal research agencies and foundations. The CEaD-I DO has been developed with funding from a consortium of 4 OPOs and coordinated by the Gift of Life Institute.
